Boys Soccer Team Honored

Syosset School District Coordintor of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation Drew Cronin recently introduced the Syosset High School Nassau County co-champion boys varsity soccer team to the community at the November Board of Education meeting. The team advanced all the way to the county championship game before falling in a shootout overtime session to Uniondale. Although rules dictate only the shootout winner may advance further in the playoffs, Syosset was named county co-champion for completing regulation time tied.

Members of the Syosset Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tom Rogers and head coach Brett Waxer all praised the team for its excellent season on the field, as well as its demonstration of great sportsmanship. The Board and Dr. Rogers are seen here congratulating the team and coaches.

Athletes Making Their Mark

Fifteen of Syosset High School’s most distinguished student-athletes recently signed National Letters of Intent to play their respective sports at the collegiate level during a ceremony before family, faculty and coaches.

Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Drew Cronin and boys varsity lacrosse coach John Calabria hosted this fall’s National Commitment Day in the school library, where students, wearing a cap from their school of choice, signed their respective letters. Deputy Superintendent Adele Bovard and Syosset High School Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante were on hand to congratulate them on this special accomplishment, and coaches were invited to speak about their teams’ members.

The National Letter of Intent is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and a postsecondary institution. The student agrees to attend the school full time and the school agrees to provide a financial scholarship for at least one academic year.

Three from Syosset Named “Coach of the Year”

The Syosset Central School District Athletics Department is proud to announce that three varsity coaches received Nassau County Section VIII “Coach of the Year” honors for the winter season. Congratulations to boys basketball coach Greg Cardona, girls basketball coach Michael Ferreira and boys swimming coach Chris Schleider. Each led their teams to successful seasons and were voted the top coach for their respective sport by their coaching peers.

A Four-Time NYS Champion!

Congratulations to Syosset High School senior Vito Arujau who won his fourth New York State championship in wrestling, becoming only the second wrestler in Nassau County history and 10th in state history to achieve this accomplishment.

Vito culminated an impressive high school wrestling career, which officially began in the eighth grade, the last time he lost a match. His 174-match win streak is a Long Island record and his 216-1 career record ranks among the best of all time. His only loss came against another four-time state champion who holds the state consecutive match streak record.

Vito holds a record five Nassau County titles and won a silver medal earlier this year at the Cadet World championships held in the country of Georgia. He also finished first in his weight class at the Super 32 national competition held in Greensboro, North Carolina last October. He was named a Newsday “Athlete of the Week” and is currently ranked No. 1 in the country for the 138-pound weight class and No. 5 overall pound for pound by Flo Wrestling, a leading source of wrestling news and rankings. Later this month Vito will take to the mat in Pittsburgh as a member of Team USA in the prestigious Dapper Dan tournament.

“World class” is the term Vito’s head wrestling coach, Mike Murtha used to describe his three-year captain. “Vito is an intelligent, dedicated and personable young man. He is always quick on his feet, with sensible reactions in all the circumstances I've seen him in,” said Murtha. “He realizes that success can only be obtained through hard work and approaching each task with a positive attitude. He is a once-in-a-lifetime athlete to coach.”

Academically, Vito is also a high achiever with a 90 grade point average. He will attend Cornell University this fall and wrestle for their team.
